DRY TRT: 67 min.
A lack of water, opportunity, and understanding are at the heart of this astounding collection of works that takes viewers to places the Film Festival hasn’t been to previously. Seeing how all kinds of people around the world live in this day and age provides an eye-opening glimpse into a world that is at turns dangerous and hopeful.

ONE DAY AFTER 10TH DAY (Yek Rooz Pas Az Dahomin Rooz) (Iran, 2009) Dir.: Narges Abyar A camel once mauled Uncle Reza’s head and now he lives alone with his few possessions and visits from a little girl. He takes care of another camel whose neck is branded with delicate sacred tattoos. Loneliness and solitude echo around him like the bell he carries to his charge each morning, the story builds complex layers around this simple man as a religious festival is staged with the camel at its centre. On the 10th Day of Muharram, Uncle Reza tries to reassure the camel as it is dressed in ceremonial trappings, and walks it into a gathering with music, historical reenactments and pilgrims. Video, 25 min., color, documentary, in Farsi w/ E.S.

A DROP (Boond) (India, 2009) Dir.: Abhishek Pathak The mundane routine in an impoverished village takes a decisive turn when nine-year-old Manka shoots Lallan, the brother-in-law of Thakur the village headman, with his .303 rifle, the only firearm left in the village with bullets in it. The only well in the area is the property of Manka and Jeevni, Manka’s mother; together they hold the power to decide who gets water and who does not. BOOND is a powerful rendition of our own secret fantasy of possessing power and being the harbinger of divine justice. The story is a moving description of helplessness in the face of awareness of the illusion of power. Video (originated on 35mm), 27 min., narrative, in Hindi w/ E.S.
