Those of us at the festival committee work hard to program what we feel are the strongest films submitted. Sometimes there are films that, for one reason or another, didn’t fit into other programs. Well, I took it upon myself to program the films I enjoyed too much to see unscreened.

BOBA AND MELON GUM Dir.: Alice Park Presented in a series of short comic vignettes, ‘Boba and Melon Gum’ is an intimate look into the relatively new phenomenon known as Boba and its various permeations within today’s culture. In this witty sampling of everyday encounters, writer/director Alice Park, portrays the idiosyncrasies of characters through their assumptions, obsessions, indulgences and insecurities. A refreshing homage of Jim Jarmusch’s art-house crowd-pleaser, ‘Coffee and Cigarettes,’ this short film throws us into the pathos of an unlikely first date, the negotiations of friendship, the chemistry of lust, and the frustrations of creative schizophrenia. THE HAIRCUT Dir.: Jai Young Choi The only thing that his roommate wants is a haircut, because he’s the only one who knows how to cut hair. Set in a college apartment somewhere in Southern California, this short workout from the California Institute of the Arts observes the often contradictory self-expressions of friends whose perspectives sometimes collide. EGGBABY Dir.: Nadine Truong A teenage Asian American Catholic school girl named Allison Chin, is confronted with her parents’ sexuality, an eggbaby project, and for the first time with the attention of a guy: twenty-something year old Matt. The mutual attraction grows between them, developing into a romance different than any girlish crush Allison has ever experienced before. Suddenly she finds herself facing the responsibilities of an adult relationship. Confusing times! What is her own stance on love and sex, and how much can she believe what she has been taught by her teachers, her parents, and her best friend? Video, 20 min., color, narrative

ON HIS WAY TO SCHOOL Dir.: Kim Gi-hyun A student, HONG Kwon-ui, is late for school and he is summoned to the teacher’s room. The teacher asks him the reason why he is late for and HONG hesitates for a moment, but answers: “Because sunshine is so soft that I forgot to go to school.” Then, this film is following at his way to school. TELEVISNU Dir.: Prithi Gowda A surreal tale of a young Indian woman who works at a call center. Her computer breaks down and in an attempt to fix it she falls into a magical, mythical web of electronic wires where memories, secrets, and hidden desires reveal themselves.
