Throughout the Film Festival Opening Weekend, panelists speaking at the Conference for Creative Content (C3) offered their perspectives on the potential and pitfalls of barreling head-on into the realm of new media. Find out what just some of these movers and shakers had to offer the well-attended C3 Conference...

Throughout the Opening Weekend of the 2011 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, panelists speaking at the Conference for Creative Content (C3) offered their perspectives on the potential and pitfalls of barreling head-on into the realm of new media. Ranging from actors, producers, screenwriters, and directors; to bloggers, talent agents, lawyers and even activists, over thirty men and women of Asian Pacific descent and more provided more than a little food for thought and guidance for the audience to chew on.

In this complement of posts, interviewers Walt Louie and Jodie Long, with videographer Pong Limlamai, chatted with select C3 panelists, yielding a broad range of opinions from both emerging and established traditional and new media artists. If their comments represented nothing else, then we should expect Asian Pacific Americans to occupy a prominent profile in the still-evolving new media landscape.

Organized by Visual Communications in partnership with the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE) and produced by Davis Jung, the C3 Conference offered a dynamic range of panels related to the development and pitfalls of the burgeoning new media landscape, and the Asian Pacific American creative community’s leading role in this new frontier.

The C3: Conference for Creative Content is made possible with the support of the Screen Actors Guild Producers Industry Advancement and Cooperative Fund (IACF), the California Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Additional support was provided by Sony Pictures Entertainment and the Writers Guild of America/west.

Hey fans, if you missed Kim Tae-yong’s LATE AUTUMN at last month’s Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, you’re in luck! The romantic drama starring Tang Wei (LUST, CAUTION) and Korean heartthrob Hyun Bin (SECRET GARDEN) will make its formal U.S. theatrical premiere at the CGV Cinemas in L.A. Koreatown for a theatrical engagement starting June 17.

In this new remake of a Korean classic, Tang plays Anna, a Chinese woman convicted of murdering her abusive husband. Granted a 72-hour reprieve to attend her mother’s funeral in Seattle, Anna meets Hoon (Hyun), a Korean “companion by call” on the run from a client’s spurned husband. Over the course of two days spent trolling the streets of sleepy Seattle, Anna and Hoon form a bond of understanding and empathy despite barriers of language and heartache between them.

Visual Communications, the nation’s premier Asian Pacific American media arts center, is pleased to present BORDER CROSSINGS, an ongoing series of screenings and talks at the Tateuchi Democracy Forum of the NCPD. Select works ranging from politics to genre, from live-action to anime and everything else in between will be augmented with shoptalks and special guest appearances.

In this installment, we are pleased to present Iara Lee’s CULTURES OF RESISTANCE. The latest documentary feature by the director of MODULATIONS and SYNTHETIC PLEASURES draws connections between people on every continent and highlights the work of artists, musicians, and dancers throughout the world who are re-conceiving resistance as an art form.

In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and, as she saw it, heading for self-destruction. After several years, travelling over five continents, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change.

From Iran, where graffiti and rap became tools in fighting government repression, to Burma, where monks acting in the tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship, moving on to Brazil, where musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars, and ending in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, where photography, music, and film have given a voice to those rarely heard, CULTURES OF RESISTANCE explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.
