FREQUENTLY-ASKED QUESTIONS

The following are answers to some questions that are often asked regarding submitting a project to the Visual Communications’ C3 Project Market. If you have any further questions, please email info [at] vconline [dot] org.

Q: Why should I submit to The C3 Project Market at the 2012 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival?

A: The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Greater Los Angeles and Southern California area dedicated to showcasing films by or about Asian Americans and Asians around the world. If invited, the C3 Project Market provides opportunities for filmmakers to showcase their projects in one-on-one industry meetings, to participate in the most exciting gathering for the Asian American film community and to develop relationships that may well turn into fruitful collaborations.

Q: If I have submitted to the 2012 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, am I also allowed to submit to the C3 Project Market?

A: Yes. They are not mutually exclusive. Filmmakers with completed films seeking to apply to the 2012 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival should fill out a separate application by visiting http://asianfilmfestla.org/2012/submit/ .

Q: Are work-in-progress submissions accepted?

A: Yes, we accept work-in-progress submissions. However, we will place added emphasis on projects that are as complete as possible. Be sure to indicate on your application the status of the project (locked screenplay, draft, treatment, outline, etc.).

Q: I’m an Asian/Asian American filmmaker, but my project has no Asian characters/subjects in it. What are the chances of my project being accepted?

A: The C3 Project Market is interested in supporting the works of Asian Pacific filmmakers. Therefore the only requirement is that the filmmaker be of Asian Pacific descent.

Q: When will I be notified about my application status?

A: All applicants will be notified via e-mail no later than April 27, 2012.

Q: Does The C3 Project Market or Visual Communications own the rights to my project if it is selected?

A: No. We do request that should your film move into production that you include the Visual Communications logo in the closing credits along with the statement: “A selected project of Visual Communications C3 Project Market.” Furthermore, one Selectee may have the possibility of being selected for Visual Communications Film Development Fund, which will award up to $100,000 towards the production of the film. If the selected filmmaker agrees to participate in this Fund, Visual Communications will become an Executive Producer of the project.

Q: Is The C3 Project Market open to Asian filmmakers from around the world?

A: Yes.

Q: I am a screenwriter, but no director is attached to my project. Do I qualify for The C3 Project Market?

A: Yes, if your work as a screenwriter has produced a completed prior work. Examples of prior work are included in the submission application.

Q: If selected, when do I need to be in attendance for the Visual Communications C3 Project Market?

A: Selectees must be in attendance during the entirety of the C3 Project Market taking place May 12-13. Producers and other team members are also welcome and encouraged to attend industry meetings and other Project Market events when noted. The total per project team should not exceed four.

Q: I live outside Los Angeles. If accepted into The C3 Project Market, will Visual Communications cover my travel and accommodations?

A: Visual Communications will provide a traveling stipend to help cover the cost of airfare and accommodation for primary participants who do not reside in the Los Angeles Metro area. Please note that the stipend may or may not cover the entire cost incurred for travel and accommodations during the duration of the market. Participants who receive a travel stipend will be responsible to arrange his/her own travel details and cover any additional cost outside of what the stipend covers.

Q: Will I be able to attend the 2012 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival as a C3 Project Market participant?

A: Yes. All primary participants are accredited as a filmmaker at the festival and will be able to accredit up to two additional team members with a “Filmmaker Guest” badge.

Q: I’m a poor student/starving artist and I am spending all my money on this project. Can you waive my submission fee?

A: Unfortunately, no. We understand the severe financial restrictions among many of our entrants. As a non-profit organization, we also operate under severe limitations on resources, and the entry fees help in allowing us to produce the best possible showcase for The C3 Project Market. We encourage all entrants to submit by the early deadline to save on the submission fee.
